The social networking project Diaspora has raised $100,000 from a public funding campaign.

The goal of the campaign was to raise $10,000 to help fund the project through the summer.

Diaspora was founded by four NYU programming students in their early 20′s and is “an open source personal web server that will put individuals in control of their data.” The service is being billed as the anti-Facebook Facebook but has yet to launch.

With Facebook receiving a lot of negative press around their privacy changes (trying to monetize more of your data) this is the perfect time to be raising funds for a would be competitor.

Could they pull it off? I think a lot of people hope they do.

The idea of charing to rent a parking space probably goes back to the beginning of time, but Carl was smart enough to find a way to do it without having to use local muscle to collect the money.

I wonder if he also came up with the idea of the 3 wheeled meter maid car?
